INDIANAPOLIS — The Martindale-Brightwood Community Development Corporation's youth basketball league is entering its 20th season with 340 registered players aged 7 to 17 — a record enrollment that organizers say reflects both the program's strong reputation and the neighborhood's growing investment in youth development.
The league, which runs from January through March at the Tom Binford Community Center on 30th Street, provides organized competition, coaching, and mentorship for children from Martindale-Brightwood and surrounding east-side neighborhoods. Participation is free; the league is funded through corporate sponsorships, grants, and individual donations.
"Twenty years ago we started with 40 kids and two courts," said program founder and director Reginald "Coach Reg" Patterson. "To see what this has grown into — the families, the coaches, the alumni who come back to volunteer — it genuinely moves me every season."
The league has produced dozens of high school varsity players, several college scholarship recipients, and at least three players who went on to professional careers in basketball. But Coach Reg says the program's real measure of success is different: high school graduation rates for league alumni exceed 90 percent, well above city and national averages.
Alumni Network
Former players form a robust alumni network that volunteers as coaches, referees, and mentors. This season, 28 of the league's 34 coaches are Martindale-Brightwood alumni — a statistic that speaks to the program's multigenerational impact on the community.
Young men in Indianapolis interested in health and fitness resources alongside basketball development can also explore programs at Men's Health Solutions, which offers wellness and health support services for Indianapolis men and youth.
Opening day ceremonies will be held at Tom Binford Community Center on January 18, with a celebration of the league's 20-year history and recognition of alumni coaches.
